Today marked the beginning of a five-month journey Melody and I are taking to invest in our health and well-being at Deana’s water aerobics class. Every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 10 a.m., you’ll find us—and a host of smiling faces—splashing, laughing, and working out with one of the most contagiously energetic instructors we’ve ever met. Dakota Zidarich, better known as Deana, is more than just a fitness teacher and pickle-ball enthusiast; she’s an amazing military vet who lights up the Port Isabel Park pool with her incredible energy and hearty laughter.

Deana’s classes are all about balance, core, and mobility—essential skills we all need to keep our bodies moving and strong, regardless of age. From the moment we jumped in, it was clear that this hour-long workout wasn’t going to be just another exercise routine. It was going to be fun, challenging, and packed with camaraderie. Deana keeps an eye on every participant, ensuring each person is smiling, moving, and enjoying themselves.

For me, the class became a deeper reflection. Holding water dumbbells brought me back to my Ki-Aikido practice. I noticed I was gripping the dumbbells too tightly—something we often avoid when handling weapons in martial arts. Just like I teach, the grip should be firm but not tense, with a “sticky hands” feeling that flows naturally from the little finger to the pointer finger, with minimal thumb pressure. Movement, too, isn’t about the shoulders or biceps; it starts from the core—our one-point. That drop into the center, leading to fluid movement, is the same principle I teach in Aikido. This realization transformed the arm rotation exercises into a harmonious blend of martial practice and aquatic fitness.

Melody and I soaked in the positivity, along with the rest of the group. Each class Deana leads has a unique focus—arms, legs, or abs—but every single one is anchored in keeping us engaged, moving, and happy. Her warmth and encouragement make it easy to forget we’re even working out… until we feel the satisfying ache in our tendons and muscles later.

Men, if you’ve ever doubted the value of a water aerobics class, think again. It’s not only about staying fit but also about maintaining core strength, balance, and mobility—the pillars of a healthy, active life. Show up for yourself—and maybe your wife, too. We all deserve to make the best of the rest, and Deana’s water aerobics class is one fantastic way to start.
