Sunday dawned bright and clear, a stark contrast to the previous day’s rblostery skies, as we embarked on an unforgettable journey to the 34th Annual Los Fresnos Rodeo (with Pro Rodeo Cowboys) and 44th Annual Cameron County Fair and Livestock Show. With the sun beaming down, we rendezvoused with Mark and Cindy, ready to immerse ourselves in the rawhide experience of a lifetime.
Navigating through the thick mud, we shifted into four-wheel drive, determined to conquer the rugged terrain without letting our boots succumb to the sloppiness below. Arriving ahead of schedule, we found ample parking and a sparse crowd, offering us the chance to indulge in fair favorites like corn dogs, hamburgers, and refreshing lemon shake-ups. As the day progressed, Melody satisfied her cravings with chicken wings and fries, all while enjoying the thrilling rodeo action.
Amidst the festivities, we found ourselves drawn to the captivating sights and sounds of the motorcycle show, also a talented band serenaded us with a medley of timeless classics spanning rock and country genres. As the crowd swelled, anticipation mounted, with lines forming for the main event.
Once inside, the atmosphere crackled with excitement as we settled into the stands, eagerly awaiting the spectacle before us. Amidst the sold-out crowd, we witnessed awe-inspiring displays of skill and bravery as cowboys and cowgirls showcased their prowess in a series of adrenaline-pumping events. From heart-stopping feats of timing and strength to heartwarming moments featuring pint-sized 5 year old riders navigating goats with hilarious aplomb, every moment was a testament to the enduring spirit of the Wild West in the Rio Grande Valley.
In a stroke of luck, I found myself the proud owner of two drink koozies, earned by successfully lassoing a wooden cow on my first attempt—a fitting memento from a day filled with unforgettable memories. And let’s not forget the highlight of the day: Melody’s daring adventure atop a live mountain of a massive steer, posing proudly with a 7-foot horn spread—an iconic image to commemorate our Rawhide adventure.
As the sun set on our Rawhide adventure, we couldn’t help but feel grateful for the experience, knowing that the bonds forged and the memories made will be cherished for a lifetime.
‘Don’t try to understand ’em
Just rope, and throw, and brand ’em
Soon we’ll be living high and wide
My heart’s calculatin’
My true love will be waitin’
Be waiting at the end of my ride’
