keith thorn – the balance of time

“Time is the only currency you spend without ever knowing the balance. Use it wisely.”

If life has taught me anything, it’s this: time is both our greatest gift and our greatest gamble.

We never know how much we have left.
Yet we spend it anyway.

On people.
On places.
On jobs.
On habits.
On relationships that either bring us life… or quietly drain it away.

Most of us have done it.

Stayed in relationships long after we knew they were no longer right.
Ignored the wisdom of friends who could see what we refused to admit.
Invested years in work that never truly valued us.
Held onto routines and patterns that felt “good enough,” even when we knew they were holding us back.

Then one day you wake up and do the math.

What did I gain?
What did I lose?
Was the time I spent worth it?

The hardest part is realizing something simple and painful:

There are no refunds.

In No Regrets, I wrote about the weight of that realization — the moment you recognize that time spent poorly cannot be reclaimed.

In The Distance We Didn’t See, I explored how years can slip away while we remain stuck in patterns we didn’t have the courage to question.

And in Finding Peace, I came to understand that anger over lost time only wastes more of it.

Because anger is just another way of spending the same precious currency.

So maybe the real lesson isn’t simply to guard our time.

Maybe it’s to be brave enough to change how we spend it.

To walk away from what no longer aligns.
To release the relationships that have already ended emotionally.
To leave the work that drains our spirit.
To break the habits that keep us repeating yesterday’s mistakes.

True change isn’t only about letting go of people or places.

Sometimes it’s about letting go of the parts of ourselves that kept us there too long.

We may never know our time balance.

But we always get to decide how we invest what remains.

Spend it wisely.

No refunds.
And if we learn the lesson in time…

No regrets.
